SCAD x Harbor Collaboration Course: Week 4

Writer: Katherine NittiKatherine Nitti

Updated: Feb 8

Feedback

Molly (Harbor):

  • Remove shots 4, 7 and 8

  • Use led volume to transition between environments (fade)

  • Put glitter in theater shots

Kyle (Harbor):

  • Practical set props, shoes, and human

  • CG shoe replacement as a possibility for leg shots

  • Simply stair shot (cut?)

  • 2d crowd with dark lighting

Overall Feedback:

  • Simplify

  • Bring focus in on the shoes

To Do

Team Overall

  • Cut down on unnecessary shots

  • Prepare Unreal Engine environments for LED Volume shooting

  • Acquire props and resources for shooting dates

Personal

  • Continue adjusting spreading fx for shot 02

    • Feedback from Professor Fowler:

      • Ensure design does not get overshadowed by spreading

      • Incorporate sparkles throughout entirety of effect

      • Adjust timing and movement to be less linear

  • Create stage decal for Yejin based off of the spreading design

  • Add the art-deco inspired design fx to the curtain

Spreading FX

Latest render with adjusted animation and sparkles

Previous version

Timing / Motion:

New timing + sparkles / without flattening effect

Sparkles:

To create the source for the sparkles, I am now isolating the edges of the spreading design using a Cd attribute transfer and delaying the geo animation by a frame. Then I am using an attribute wrangle to delete any point with the transferred color.

  • Allows for more precise sourcing of the geos' edges

  • Less heavy than a boolean and more accurate than a group by bounding region

Point velocity settings
Point velocity settings

The sparkles movement are now calculated by a point velocity node, where as before it was through pop wind and pop attract nodes.

  • More precise

  • Easier to accurately adjust

  • Gives the appearance of the sparkles wrapping around the lines as they spread out

Curtain FX

For the theater far shot, we are adding a moving design to the curtain.

While the design is not yet finalized, I drafted the system for this effect using Houdinis pyro spread system as a base because:

  • Using keyframes and carves would be excessive with a larger design like this

  • Allows for easy randomization

  • Allows flexibility with the design as it develops

The design is 2D and to be used in a shader, yet I am still creating it in Houdini for flexibility.
