SCAD x Harbor Collaboration Course: Week 2

Entering week 2 of the SANM collab class, we had the opportunity to pitch our projects to the mentors from Harbor and receive some very helpful feedback on our concepts.

From the feedback from the mentors, as well as the writing department students who took the time to sit in and offer advice, it was brought up that our story needs a more concise conclusion to the actresses story and identity - especially regarding the second to last shot of her posing.

Several ideas were brought up regarding her purpose, whether she was a model at a photoshoot, an actress, a politician, doing an interview, etc. In the end, our group settled on her being on the red carpet of an award ceremony, walking to receive her prestigious prize. We reorganized the shots slightly to accommodate for this (as seen in Yejins boards) and Jingxing and Tianze are working on adjusting the previs. We also changed the shoe color back to red.

This conclusion came in conjunction with our visit to the led volume. Being able to see the screen and what it's been used for in the past, we had a discussion on what the best ways to use it may be.

To accommodate for the emphasis of her being on a red carpet of an awards show, we’ve adjusted our shot of the city dissolving to be a red carpet backdrop instead of the flashing lights from before.

We believe that the led volume could provide an effective background for an award ceremony shot, similar to the inspiration pics below.

While award ceremony backdrops come in many shapes and colors, we opted to have ours be composed of luxurious layered curtains.

This is the progress I’ve made for the curtains this Friday 1/17, and I intend to continue cleaning up the folds and adding layers for it to be seen seamlessly from a wider angle.

On top of this, I’ve continued to develop the design for the spreading effect. I’ve added to my collection of inspiration, with Julian mentioning kaleidoscopes as a good reference as well.

Here is the first version of the effect:

The system is curve based, and uses a vex wrangle for the expanding effect. I hoped to create it in a way that would be easy to adjust the design for future iterations, and opted to keyframe the motion manually to have more control over the timing.
